Emily Smyth Vartanian is a
professional dancer, producer, and choreographer living in New York
City.
She has performed a wide variety
of works with an even wider variety of companies: from contemporary
modern movement with Kybele Dance Theater and rhythm tap with Metronome
Tap company, to Argentine Tango and aerial work with Above & Beyond
Dance, and Lindy Hop with the national tour of Forever Swing!
Emily believes in the power
movement has to tell stories, and does her best to be fluent in as
many movement languages as possible. She and her dance partner Pawel
Cheda placed second in the stage division of this year's USA Tango
Championship. She is also heading up General Mischief Dance Theatre,
a new company dedicated to reinforcing the power that joy and laughter
have in communicating ideas. General Mischief combines aerial work
with more earthbound forms of movement and, in doing so, strives to
remove the spatial and physical limits from theatrical dance.
Emily is a native of Oakland,
California and attended UCLA where she graduated from the Dance concentration
of the World Arts & Cultures program. She is an alumnus of the Broadway
Theatre Project and a certified Bikram Yoga instructor - she currently
teaches at Bikram Yoga Harlem and Bikram Yoga NYC.
